Brave beautician Amie Hayward is preparing to chop off her blonde locks - in honour of ‘two of her favourite people’.
Five years ago the Kirton resident saw her friend Siobhan Hall lose her battle with cancer.
And after witnessing her grandfather Mervyn Hayward also being treated for the disease, Amie pledged to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.
It is a case of hair today, gone very soon as she takes part in a sponsored head shave at a Kirton Leisure Centre fundraiser on August 31.
“It’ll grow back,” was the pragmatic response Amie - who works at the village’s Jayne Rush Hair and Beauty Salon - gave when asked if she’ll miss her do.
“I work as a beautician at a hairdressers, and how you look is really part of your uniform,” she said.
“My hair’s always been very important to me. I once cried when my friend cut it too short.
“But I want to do this as it’s for a good cause who helped two of my favourite people.”
Amie originally set herself a target of raising £500, but with support flocking in she already has more than £1,000 in the coffers with just over a week to go until the big day.
Her target is now to raise £1,500.
“Everyone has been really supportive,” added Amie, who turns 24 five days after her headshave. “I’m seeing this as an opportunity to cut it all off and start all over again - to do something new with my hair.
“As soon as it’s gone there’s no turning back. I’m not going to wear a wig either - I’m just going to embrace it.
“But I might have a few glases of wine beforehand.”
Grandad Mervyn will watch on proudly with a pint in hand as Amie loses her locks at the bar where he is a regular.
But the Edinburgh Drive resident reckons pal Siobhan’s response may have been a little different.
Amie said: “She did hair and beauty at Boston College as well.
“She loved her hair and would be shocked at what I’m doing. But if things were the other way around I know she would do something like this for me.”
The fundraising day will begin at 1pm on August 31 and also include a bouncy castle, food stalls, face painting, a cake auction and plenty more.
