Arrests made after Border Agency raid

THREE arrests have been made at an Indian restaurant in Boston following a UK Border Agency raid.

Acting on intelligence, officers visited Bombay Brasserie in West Street at about 7pm on Thursday where checks revealed three members of staff had no permission to be in the UK.

All were male visa overstayers from Bangladesh, aged 33, 30 and 28 years-old.

The 28-year-old has been released on immigration bail while his case is dealt with.

The others both remain in UK Border Agency (UKBA) detention while work to remove them from the country is carried out.

The Bombay Brasserie now faces a potential fine of up to £30,000 – which is £10,000 per illegal member of staff. To avoid the penalty it must prove that right-to-work checks were carried out on the three men.

UKBA officer Paul Tranter said: “Where we find people who are in the UK illegally we will seek to remove them. But we are also looking to target the employers who take on illegal workers and fuel illegal immigration.”

He added: “We’re happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be done on staff, but those who choose to break the law should know that we are looking for them and they will face heavy fines.”

Every year the UKBA imposes civil penalties on hundreds of companies which fail to carry out legally-required checks on their staff. It provides support to employers so they can understand the rules, including visits by staff, a dedicated telephone helpline and website.

l The Standard contacted the Bombay Brasserie but no-one was available to comment.
