Bargate book raises £4,000 for charity

Ralph Ottey’s book Memories of Bargate in Boston Lincolnshire took a look at the history of each of the buildings and structures- including the war memorial - along both Strait and Wide Bargates.

On Wednesday evening, proceeds from the book, which cost £10, were handed out in £1,000 sums to St Botolph’s Church Restoration Fund, Boston in Bloom, Boston Veteran’s Way and for the general upkeep of the War Memorial.

Ralph told those attending the event at the Bostonand County Club: “My publisher and I were taken aback by the enormity of the task that we had started. We asked for help and you responded swiftly and generously - for that we are grateful.”

Publisher Dudley Bryant said: “This was such an enjoyable experience. We all think we know a lot about Boston’shistory but believe me, we don’t know anything.

“The research for this book made it obvious to me that there’s substantially more local history and heritage hidden below the radar.”

The cheques were presented by Mayor of Boston Coun Richard Austin, who campaigned during his year in office for the promotion and preservation of Boston’s heritage.

He said: “This project not only enhances the heritage and image of our town, but raised money to do just that.”

Collecting the money for Boston in Bloom, Alison Fairman dedicated the donation to Garth Isaac, who recently passed away.

Boston Borough Coun Claire Rylott thanked all who took part in Boston in Bloom.

Memories of Bargate in Boston is available from Waterstones, the Stump Shop and Johnson’s Garden Centre.Proceeds will continue to be shared between the charities.
