Booming youth club sets out on a cash drive

Friday, 12.45pm - KIRTON Youth Club is in danger of becoming a victim of its own success, with more equipment now than it can afford to store.

Since its re-launch six months ago, club membership has grown in leaps and bounds. Around 130 youngsters aged between nine and 17 now meet on Wednesday and Friday nights at Kirton Youth Centre, in the High Street, for a variety of activities.

But an appeal for donations has left organisers with more items than they can house, and it's starting to cost them.

Catrina Smith, of Edinburgh Drive, who runs the club with husband Brian Morley, said: "It's been absolutely fantastic. We've had some wonderful donations, like snooker tables and pool tables, but we've got no storage at the centre."

The couple currently rent a storage container for the equipment, which in addition to the normal running costs means the club often makes a loss.

The club has been something of a blessing for much of Kirton's youth who were struggling to find a recreational space.

The club has also gained the support of the police, which has reported a drop in anti-social behaviour complaints on club nights, but to ensure the trend continues and the club has a long-term future, organisers are beginning fundraising activities.

Between 2,500 and 3,000 is needed for on-site storage, and a gala will take place at Kirton Town Hall on Sunday, July 13 to help raise funds.

Corporal Richard Naioukas, of ITV's Bad Lads Army, will be giving boot camp demonstrations.

Gladiator duels, a bouncy castle, a coconut shy and a taekwondo demonstration will be among the additional entertainment.

Craft stalls will also be present, and table tops can be hired for 5.

Entrance is free, and the event runs from noon-4pm.
