Boston fish merchant is big fish
Friday, 10.40am - A BOSTON fish merchant has netted a major trade award from one of Europe's biggest fish markets.
Nanne and Son, the business of Kmil Kolaucali, 56, of Churchill Drive, has been recognised as the 'biggest trader' in Ostend, Belgium, in 2008.
The city's fish auctions attract hundreds of sellers, with Mr Kolaucali outdoing them all in terms of quantity.
"It is the biggest fish market in Belgium and one of the biggest in Europe," he said.
Mr Kolaucali has been in Boston for 12 years. The town is one of the fishing ports along the east coast of England from which he buys seafood to sell at the Beglium auctions, and also at wholesale markets in France, the Netherlands, and Grimsby.
When he started the business, 20 years ago, he was working in catering in London's West End.
But on an a family outing to Clacton, in Essex, he bought some goods from a fisherman trading from a small rowing boat, which he then sold on to his place of work.
From this, the business has expanded to its award-winning status today.
"I feel I have achieved something for my work," he said.
He received a commemorative plate marking his successful fishing trading in Ostend from the city's Mayor.
"I feel I have contributed to the economy," he said. "I have created jobs, I have created business, I have created trade."
