Boston flood barrier project timescale cut by 18 months

The Government has revealed Boston’s £100 million flood barrier will be built 18 months sooner than expected.

Today it has emerged that MP Mark Simmonds has received a letter from Dan Rogerson MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The letter states: “Work to reduce the delivery timescale is already underway. For example, the design and procurement for the barrier will run in parallel with securing the Transport and Works Act Order. This approach should reduce the programme by 18 months.”

The letter says the cash is being agreed by the Treasury, Defra and Environment Agency.

Mr Simmonds had lobbied to bring forward the barrier in the wake of December’s floods.

The cut will mean the barrier should be in place in 2017/18 instead of 2019. The Environment Agency said the barrier would have prevented the damage done on December 5.
