Boston hits the national headlines

Wednesday, 5pm: Boston has been featured heavily in today's national press after the town was mentioned in the House of Commons as a migration 'pinch-point'

Along with Arun, in West Sussex, Boston was highlighted by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears as a town which had undergone rapid population change.

She told MPs that the town had coped well with the arrival of thousands of migrant workers.

She said : "If you talk to Boston, something like 25 per cent of their population is from eastern European countries and they've said it is fundamental to their economy: they absolutely need those people for the skills, but equally there is a big impact."

The minister went on to praise local councils and the police for the way they helped new arrivals with 'welcome packs' and 'jargon busting' initiatives.

A report by the Department of Communities and Local Government said migrant workers are mainly from Portugal and eastern European countries.

It also said that 65 different languages are now spoken in the town.
