Boston experienced mixed weather in January, which saw a mild and sunny start replaced by freezing fog and treacherous conditions.
The town’s weatherman Albert Kirkham said the first nine days of the month were ‘very mild, dry and sunny’ – but then came the very cold days and nights, bringing snow, sleet and freezing fog.
However, by the end of the month the milder weather returned, which Mr Kirkham said brought about a ‘rapid thaw’ by the 27th.
The highest maximum temperature, on the 29th, was 13.9C (57F).
The lowest maximum temperature, recorded on the 16th, was -3.9C (25F).
On the 4th, the temperature fell no lower than 7.8C (46F) but on the 17th it was as low as -8.9C (16F).
The mean maximum temperature of the month was 6.1C (42.6F) below the average 6.7C (44F) for January. The mean minimum was 0.6C (33.1F) against the average of 1.1C (34F).
The lowest minimum grass temperature recorded was -12.8C (9F) which came on the 17th.
The town had less rainfall than usual, with 42.3mm (1.67 ins) against the average of 56mm (2.21 ins) across 14 days of measurable rain.
The greatest rainfall in one day came on the 25th with 10.2mm (0.40ins).
Townspeople had just 51.6 hours of bright sunshine in January, less than the average of 59.9 hours.

There were 12 days of snow on the ground, 23 ground frosts, 16 air frosts, nine days of sleet, three days of fog and 17 days with no sunshine at all.
