Boston schools cash in

Wednesday, 11.30am - EDUCATION in Boston is set to be revolutionised for hundreds of children as two schools are chosen for a slice of £70 million for redevelopment works.

The Boston Grammar Schools Federation and Haven High Technology College are among five schools in Lincolnshire set to benefit from the Government funding.

The sum is proposed to be used for 'at least a 70 per cent new build' at the two schools, according to the organisation overseeing the programme, Partnerships for Schools.

It is not yet known how much the Federation and the Technology College will receive, though 7.6 million is earmarked for ICT across the five.

Adrian Reed, executive headteacher of Boston Witham Schools Federation, which includes Haven High, said it would be a '21st century school'.

He said: "I hope we will have a building that will not only be a wonderful place to learn but a building that will be a beacon of good design."

He said that the plan is to have the new build on the same site in Marian Road and have room for more pupils to cater for its continued growing intake.

Chairman of the governors at the Boston Grammar Schools Federation Tony Elmer also welcomed the funding.

He said, however, the board had yet to meet to discuss its plans for the money or how it would affect intake at its sites in Spilsby Road and South End.

Only last month the governors announced it would revert to having boys and girls taught at separate sites until funding could be secured.

Mr Elmer said: "We are very excited and this can only be good for the students, staff, and parents of Boston and the surrounding area."

The funding has been provided by the Department for Schools, Children and Families following a bid from Lincolnshire County Council.

The schools chosen were those thought to be most in need of refurbishment or redevelopment.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council said it would be working with the governors and consulting with the communities involved to 'take these exciting plans forward'.
