Boston College plans off

Wednesday, 2.30pm - BOSTON College's plans for a new £79 million campus are off.

The project is not among those chosen to receive funding from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the college has announced.

Plans for the redevelopment were first revealed in November last year, but then suspended in March when the Government-funded LSC realised it did not have enough money to support all applications.

Now, after three years of planning, designing, and consultations with businesses, the public, and the council, the college has failed in its bid for 69 million.

Boston College principle Sue Daley said: "The people of Boston would have really benefited from the big investment the college had planned."

She continued: "It is really frustrating to have been given this news. A new building would have allowed us to really capitalise on all the positive things that we have been achieving recently, with a great Ofsted report, numerous national awards and good results for our learners."

The LSC chose just 13 projects from more than 200 submitted nationwide for funding – none from Lincolnshire.

No further funding is expected to be available until the next Comprehensive Spending Review in 2011.

Boston College is now looking into various options for the development of its current estate.

In a statement, the college said that it is 'optimistic that now the true situation is known it can plan and invest effectively to make the college attractive and valuable for future students and business in Lincolnshire and beyond'.
