Boston fire station could go 24-hour
BOSTON’S fire station could be crewed 24 hours a day to provide a better emergency response service under proposed plans.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s plans, now under consultation, would see the number of 24-hour stations in the county increased from two to nine.
The two 24-hour stations are both currently based in Lincoln.
The Boston station is crewed during the day, from 7.30pm-6pm, but under the new scheme could see current fire crews manning the station around the clock.
Specialist training would be given to 24-hour crews and an increase in weekly training would be given to retained firefighters at other stations in the borough.
Nick Davis, group manager for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said: “We’re investing more in training than we have done in previous years, and by becoming 24-hour stations, we believe it will give the public a better fire and rescue service.”
It is also proposed that the Boston station will get back its swift water rescue boat, which was relocated to Spalding in 2010, and fire crews would receive specialist training in this area.
Mr Davis said the plans for the seven stations to be manned 24-hours will cost just under £500,000 each year but added: “The money will come from efficiency savings in the existing budget so will not cost the taxpayer any more money.”
Under the new plans, the number of times a full-time crew is one of the first on the scene of an emergency, is expected to double.
If given the go-ahead, the plans will be implemented in April.
The changes are not expected to see additional firefighters being taken on at the Boston station.
