BUDGET: No parking charge for borough council staff

STAFF at Boston Borough Council will continue to park for free in the town’s car parks, despite residents facing fee hikes to increase council revenue.

People using the car parks are facing a 10p increase across all tariffs during the day, hitting hundreds of commuters who park in the town every day.

But this will not affect the 281 workers at the authority – along with the 32 councillors – who are given permits to park free in car parks around the borough for when they are on civic duty.

Coun Derek Richmond, portfolio holder for town centres, said they would not be affected as it was thought they had faced enough hardship recently, accepting a two year pay freeze and dealing with other restrictions.

Coun Raymond Singelton-Maguire added: “They have taken a hit and they have been restricted.”

A spokesman for the council said that staff had agreed to measures which have saved the authority a total of £400,000.

An absolute incredible ruling that favours only a specific group of people. The whole country\region\town is in the grips of a recession. I haven't had a payrise for 4 years and it looks like another 2 to 3 before that will happen. 1,00's of people in the town are in the same predicament, and unemployment in the town is up. But is is still ok to increase charges to these folks because they do not work for "the man". COME ON BOSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL,PLAY THE GAME!!! The welfare of this town belongs to us all and in our way we are all responsible for the improvement fo the town. What makes employees of Boston Borough Council any different to me, my next door neighbour etc... COME TO THINK OF IT DO EMPLOYEES OF THE COUNCIL STILL RECIEVE FRRE OR REDUCED GYM MEMBERSHIP AT THE GEOFF MOULDER COMPLEX?

Coun Raymond Singleton-Maguire commented on the Borough staff taking a hit. They always do. The Councillors though had their expenses increased dramatically when the new council were elected. The old BBI kept that figure down. Always remember the Tory slogan: What did the BBI do for Boston, NO BYPASS. In three years time it will say: What did the Tories do for Boston. NO BYPASS and INCREASED COSTS OF COUNCILLORS. But they still have free parking, not only at the Municipal Buildings, but in the car parks. Having your cake and eating it!!

Coun Raymond Singelton-Maguire added: “They have taken a hit and they have been restricted.” He is right they have taken a hit but so have the majority of people. I have a 2 year freeze on my pay, a number of allowances stopped which in real terms means less money. So why do I have to pay more and how do the wardens know when these people are on civic duties and not out shopping. Also what is wrong with these people walking from the council offices, west street isn't far from the town center.
