Candidate pulls out of police and crime commissioner role
Controversial police and crime commissioner candidate Mervyn Barrett has pulled out of the race to be the public head of Lincolnshire’s force.
The independent contender, who has been awarded the OBE, came under the national spotlight at the weekend over the way his campaign was being funded.
His team all resigned ahead of a piece by Andrew Gilligan in the Sunday Telegraph, which questioned whether his backers standed to gain from police privatisation.
Mr Barrett, who was labelled ‘Swervin’ Mervyn’ at a hustings event in Boston last week, will formally confirm he has pulled out of the race with a statement to the media later.
Boston English Democrat Elliott Fountain also does not feature on the line-up of contenders.
The post will be contested by David Bowles (Campaign to stop politicians running policing), Richard Davies (Conservative), Paul Gleeson (Labour) and Alan Hardwick (Independent).
