Heavy weather conditions have torn down a tree into a graveyard in Freiston, as the area is battered by strong winds.

The tree, in Freiston Churchard was reported to have been felled, when it snapped at the base, narrowly missing the bus stop but causing debris all over the road.

Locals have been reported to have helped clear the area and make it safe.

Standard reader Hayley Coope alerted the paper to the incident by Tweeting: “Tree down in Freiston, from churchyard into bust stop, nobody hurt, locals clearing debris.”

She later added: “The trunk missed it, just all the branchy bits so no major damage, just drivers must be aware, snapped at base of trunk.”

Trees are also understood to have fallen at Doves Lane, Butterwick, Sea Lane, Old Leake, Gauntlet Road, Bicker, the A16, near Pilgrim Hospital and Abbey Road, Swineshead - some of these have brought wires down and are being attended by power companies, but may cause disruption to services.

A police spokesman confirmed no vehicles have so far been damaged and no-one is yet thought to have been hurt.

The incidents come after a yellow ‘be aware’ warning of strong winds remains in place for Lincolnshire.
