The plea from Lincolnshire Police’s community safety team comes with the warning that unless police, fire and ambulance staff can locate your road and property’s name or number, you could miss out on vital assistance in times of emergency.

Community safety officer Gill Finn said: “On many occasions, we are not able to find a property due to the name or house number being obscured from easy view.

“So we would ask people to take a simple test by standing on the roadside to see if they can clearly see their house name or number.

“This is particularly important if you are a single occupant and have not got a relative who can stand outside and flag down the emergency service.

“If not, valuable time could be wasted if the emergency services have to drive up and down your road trying to locate the correct house name or number.

“It is good practice to have a house name or number located on your fence or driveway entrance and or near your front door.

“Also try to have the letters or numbers as large as your fixing location will allow.

“But above all think - if you can’t see your house number or name then the emergency services won’t see it either.”
