Council budget aims to tackle ‘fiscal cliff’ with another £1 million of savings

Motorists and council staff are going to be asked to help Boston Borough Council make savings of up to £1 million in the next five years.

The authority plans to impose a number of measures over the coming years in a bid to boost reserves and deal with a drop in Government funding.

Increasing parking tarrifs by 20p, introducing overnight charges and renegotiating staff contracts have been put forward as ways to help combat the council’s own ‘fiscal cliff’ in the authority’s latest budget.

Finance portfolio holder Coun Raymond Singelton-McGuire said: “Given that funding is reducing and there are continuing expenditure pressures, going forward the council needs to find around £1 million in savings over the next five years.”

However, the authority would not be increasing council tax to achieve the reductions. A grant from the Government has meant the borough’s portion of the tax remains the same as it has for the past few years – an average of £168.39.

Other plans for boosting the council’s income are increasing fees at council-run facilities including the Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre and the crematorium, and introducing charges for street naming and numbering and events in Central Park, as well as bringing in a new pall bearing service.
