Developer hails £4.75m Government boost for Quadrant - but campaigners say deal ‘stinks’

The Government has given a £4.75 million boost to the Quadrant development – cash that means work could start on the project next year.

The Chestnut Homes scheme aims to provide a new location for Boston United as well as 500 homes, a supermarket, road, shops and hotel at land in Wyberton.

The Quadrant was one of six projects to benefit from money as part of the Government’s ‘Growth Deal’ and had been put forward for the investment by the Greater Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership.

The total cost of the first phase of the Quadrant will be £23.8 million but the Government money will mean that, if planning permission is secured, work can get under way next year.

Chestnut Homes managing director David Newton said: ”We are delighted that this funding has been secured. The Quadrant faced strong competition from other projects in the Greater Lincolnshire area, so we are very pleased that the importance of the scheme to the local economy has been recognised by both the GLEP and the Government.

“Although other funding streams will also need to be secured, this is a huge step forward for The Quadrant development, and will enable work to start in 2015 subject to planning permission being granted, giving a great boost to the local economy.”

The investment was also hailed by Boston MP Mark Simmonds, who said: “This investment shows what 
could be achieved when local MPs and councillors work together to deliver for Lincolnshire.

“This announcement is hugely positive for future economic development.”

The news was met with disappointment and surprise by the Wyberton Quadrant Action Group.

If agreed by councillors, the Quadrant plans will need the stamp of approval of the Government.

Campaigners feel it will be impossible to say no with Government money behind the project.

Chairman Brian Rush told The Standard: “The whole thing, frankly, stinks.”

He said he welcomed the prospect of investment in Boston, but still feels the Quadrant - set for land south of Tytton Lane East - is in the wrong place.

He added: “There’s no town that needs investment more than this town. We have been orphans and been betrayed by Government after Government.

“Here’s a chance to get development, yes, I agree. Do we need it? Yes. Do we need it there? No we don’t?”

He argues that the football club should be made to locate next to the Princess Royal Sports Arena to create a ‘sports village’.

He added: “We need Boston United Football Club. It’s part of the fabric of the town but I don’t want to see it going to an area that destroys the fabric of the society around it.”

A special meeting of the planning committee is to be held on August 5 at Haven High Academy to discuss the plans.

Mr Rush said: “This town is shared between us all. They need to be responsible for the people of this town for generations to come.”
