Donington Library reopens on Wednesday as community hub

The High Street library was one of 30 closed in county council cost-cutting measures but it will have a new lease of life – offering all the same services as before – thanks to volunteers.

The library’s doors shut in September, almost six months ago, and the huge team of people responsible for this new chapter are thrilled to see the fruits of all of their hard work.

Peter Lorimer, one of the hub organisers, said: “We are incredibly pleased. It’s a huge relief.

“There have been a lot of people putting an awful lot of hard work into it and it hasn’t been easy.”

The hub opens initially from 10am-1pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays and 2pm-6pm on Fridays.

There are plans to extend those hours, invite in more community groups and to revamp the remainder of the building so it can be brought into community use.

“We are looking to the future and to expanding the things that are available at the library,” said Mr Lorimer. “We want to bring more groups into the library and have more activities there. We are looking forward to working with Lincolnshire County Council in restoring and renovating the rest of the building and, in time, making that available.”

The hub project had support from Donington Parish Council and its clerk Diane Fairweather and district councillor Jane King, who is “thrilled” it is reopening.
