Wet weather may have dampened the spirits of many Bostonians over the festive period – but it could have been a lot worse.

The frequent rain over the past few weeks has left the ground almost saturated, and could have resulted in major flooding had it not been for the work of local drainage boards.

Their efforts may have been particularly evident to shoppers heading to Tesco over the South Forty Foot Drain and the New Hammond Beck.

Black Sluice IDB pumping stations were working continuously over Christmas to ensure flooding did not occur, and staff from the Environment Agency worked 12-hour shifts operating large pumps to clear the excess.

The situation was monitored throughout the day and night, ensuring drainage channels did not get too high and workmen have been working every day clearing weeds and ensuring all of the pumps and automatic weedscreen cleaners were operating.
