Driving us potty - Boston’s crumbling roads highlighted

Crumbling roads across Boston borough are menacing motorists – with the current cold snap only making matters worse.
Drivers frequently grumble about the state of the streets, which are scarred with countless cracks and craters andThe Standard has today decided to highlight some of the worst offending roads.
We asked you to tell us where the worst potholes were, and you came back with plenty of suggestions. We have passed the information to Lincolnshire County Council’s (LCC) highways department to try to get them fixed.
A spokesman said weather caused potholes to deepen, and made it difficult to repair the roads, but urged people to report areas in need of repairs.
Simon Wharff, area highways manager for the council, said: “Each year, LCC invests nearly £50 million on repairs to maintain 5,500 miles of road. We have 10 teams who carry out reactive and planned repairs and we also run an emergency repairs service to fix particularly bad pot holes within 24 hours.”
But that could offer little comfort to furious motorists who took to Facebook and Twitter to tell us about their daily pothole problems.
Sally Revell said: “At the end of Fishtoft Road, there’s a really bad hole. It will bring a rider off bike or motorbike”
Nick Thompson said: “Spayne Road/York Steet jucnction. The surface is totally shredded. Reported it to LCC twice but they’ve just chucked a bit of (new surface) in some bits which all came out in a couple of days.”
Stuart Bull added: “Benington Road, Butterwick, has potholes as big as buckets.”
And they are not just irritating, Tim Barnes-Clay, from the Countryside Land and Businesses Association, said: “Potholes affect every road user – but especially motorists in rural locations where roads tend to be neglected at the best of times.
“Local councils need to take action in alleviating this problem but it’s also important for motorists to play their part in reporting potholes to councils.
“Potholes are not simply an irritation they are a considerable road safety concern.
“More cold weather over the next few days will not only create more holes, it will move council staff from repairs to gritting duties, so potholes will appear faster than they get fixed. The only way to avoid damaging your car is to be on the lookout, especially on rural routes.”
