A Boston club which has been providing hot dinners for the elderly for more than 40 years has been forced to shut its doors.

The Friday Luncheon Club based at Centenary Methodist Church had dozens of regulars who went along for a meal and a chat once a month, with some well into their nineties.

But now the decision has been made to close the group, as the elderly women who run it feel they cannot continue to do so.

Mavis Woods, who has helped out with the Red Lion Street group for the last 25 years, said: “The two ladies that ran it are now in their late 80s and there is nobody else who can do it. It ran for more than 40 years, and one of the ladies had been there all that time.”

She added that it was a good opportunity for some of the members to socialise, as they could otherwise be quite isolated.

A notice had been put up in the church to try and get people to help, but nobody had been forthcoming.

The last meal the group enjoyed together was a special Christmas lunch on December 7.

Though the club has now gone, the methodist church still offers a meal once a week on a Wednesday, which anybody can go along to, and there is a Friday Fellowship meeting, which many luncheon club members go along to.

As yet, there are no plans to restart the Friday club.
