Food, film and fun at farm's open day

Wednesday, 12pm - ALWAYS wanted to find out more about where the food on your plate comes from?

And no, we are not talking about a trip to Asda or Tesco.

Woodlands Organic Farm, in Kirton, will be throwing open its gates for free on Sunday and is encouraging as many people as possible to pay a visit.

Owner Andrew Dennis said: "It should be a great day with lots to see, taste and experience.

"Woodlands continues to evolve each year and this year's new additions include the Lincolnshire buff chickens and our two rare breed pigs.

"Woodlands is one of the last remaining places where you can find two of our rarest farmland birds, the corn bunting and the marsh harrier. Perhaps we'll be lucky and see them on Sunday."

Tractor and trailer rides will be running throughout the day and visitors will be able to walk the poetry trail and meet the rare breed turkeys, Lincoln red cattle, Lincoln longwool sheep, Lincolnshire buff chickens and the farm's curly coat pigs – direct descendants of the Lincolnshire curly coat pig which became extinct in 1972.

Visitors will also be able to walk through the market garden and see the organic vegetables and soft fruit.

Furthermore, the day will include displays by the RSPB, the Lincolnshire Bat Group and the Slow Food Movement, along with face painting for charity.

Farm machinery will be on show and there will be an art exhibition of eco-sculpture by Lincolnshire artist Elaine Munson and a film about the farm produced by students of the Giles School, Old Leake.

But if all that's still not enough to tempt you, then how about an all-day barbecue and refreshments along with market stalls showcasing the farm's award-winning organic produce?

l The open day will be held between 10am-4pm. For further information, call 01205 724778 or visit the website www.woodlandsfarm.co.uk
