Free bicycle safety and security event

Friday 5pm - Young people in Boston are being invited to bring their bicycles along to a special event being held in Central Park on Friday September 3.

The session, which will run from 10am until 2pm, has been organised by members of Boston's Neighbourhood Policing Team and will give youngsters the opportunity to make sure their bicycles are ready for the start of the new school year.

Free cycle safety checks will be offered to assess roadworthiness and to identify existing and potential faults and there will be a chance to practise basic cycle skills in a controlled area under the supervision of Pcsos who have been trained to deliver the Bikewise skills programme in schools.

A number of Immobilise cycle security tags have also been made available for fitting on the day. The microchip tags are similar to those used to identify pets.

They are placed within the frame of the cycle where they are difficult to remove and the unique number is linked to the owner via the Immobilise website. If a bike is stolen and then subsequently recovered, it can be scanned to identify the owner and returned.

The tags usually cost 13.99 but Inspector Phil Clark has arranged for a quantity of tagging kits to be provided free on the day.

"A large percentage of stolen bicycles are recovered and brought into the Police Station in Boston", said Inspector Clark.

"Great efforts are made to reunite them with their rightful owners but this is not always possible if the bikes cannot be identified. Micro-chipping is a modern, practical way to security mark cycles and I am delighted that we can use the free kits to promote this innovative method.

"This event is a marvellous opportunity for local children to learn how to keep themselves and their cycles safe".

With the onset of autumn, attendees at the event will also be reminded about the importance of being visible when out cycling. One hundred high-visibility waistcoats are to be given away free and literature and information will be on hand to advise how cyclists can further protect themselves.

A competition is being run for under 16s in which they can win goody bags containing front and rear lights. Competition entry forms will be handed out on the day.

Pcso Marie Williams has co-ordinated the event and is hoping that many young people will bring their bikes along. "A great number of local youngsters will be using their bikes to get to school next week and we want to make sure that their journeys are as safe as possible, particularly as the nights draw in," she said.

"The Immobilise tags offer a real deterrent against cycle thieves and I encourage as many people as possible to come along and take advantage of this excellent opportunity."
