Get ready for town's big clean
Tuesday, 3.30pm - GROTTY issues have been raised at an initial meeting of the 2010 Big Boston Clean Up.
As part of the launch of the week-long campaign - happening from Monday, April 12 to that Friday - organisations were invited to a meeting to discuss ideas for this year's event.
During the meeting last Tuesday, the town was noted to be a lot cleaner than it had been, but a number of points were raised.
These included fallen fences, graffiti, hidden grot spots, the entrance roads to Boston, CCTV and possible ways to deal with drunks.
Solutions suggested were to get the graffiti painted over with murals, involve local companies and businesses in the Big Boston Clean Up, and a campaign to target grot spots and celebrate hot spots.
The Big Boston Clean Up project was initiated in 2008 and led by Boston Borough Council and the Environment Agency because of repeated complaints regarding litter in Boston.
The aims are to raise awareness of and reduce waste litter, encourage personal ownership of litter, provide sustainable means for communities to clean up their own areas and improve community cohesion.
During the campaign, Boston borough is divided into five areas with one area being tackled each day.
Volunteers are provided with litter picking equipment such as high visibility jackets, litter pickers, gloves and bags.
They are encouraged to separate glass and aluminium cans for recycling.
Numerous partners continue to be involved in the event, including Lincolnshire County Council, the Probation Service, Police, North Sea Camp, and the Mayflower and Longhurst housing associations.
