Golden award for special school

Thursday, 12pm - JOHN Fielding is painting a picture of success after being the first special school in Lincolnshire to be awarded the Artsmark Gold award.

The award – handed out by Arts Council England – is open to all primary and secondary schools.

It recognises learning centres with high provisions for the arts, both in and out of school, as well as the development of pupils and staff.

St Thomas', Staniland and Park Community schools have also been recognised in the latest round of awards.

"We're very proud," said John Fielding head Sue Morrison.

"To be the first special school in the county to get the gold award is very special."

The Artsmark award lasts for three years and during that time schools are expected to continue to improve their commitment to the arts.

But John Fielding isn't the only school in our area to be celebrating an Artsmark standard.

The award is handed out at three levels – Artsmark, Artsmark Silver and Artsmark Gold.

Lincolnshire now has 88 schools with Artsmark status, making it the highest-performing local authority in the East Midlands and sixth best in the country overall.

Lincolnshire County Council's Coun Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for children's services, said: "I am absolutely delighted by this success.

"We have been encouraging schools to take part in the arts and we are very proud of our achievement in this area of school life."

A brush with success – which schools have been handed the Artsmark award?

Artsmark Gold: St Thomas', Staniland.; Artsmark Silver: Park Community; Artsmark Gold: John Fielding.
