Highly-paid council staff cost taxpayers thousands of pounds, research shows

More than £440,000 was spent on highly-paid staff within Boston Borough Council last year, a new report has shown.
Information released by the Taxpayers’ Alliance has found there were six people paid salaries of more than £50,000 per annum in the financial year 2011-12 – adding up to a total of £445,000 a year for the authority.
Almost a quarter of that amount was spent on chief executive Richard Harbord, who is paid an annual salary of almost £108,000 to work just 15 days a month for the authority.
Statistics reveal that although the number of people being paid in excess of £50,000 had not altered since the previous year, the amount being paid out had gone up by £10,000.
Lincolnshire County Council was shown to have increased its wage payout for highly-paid staff by £4,935,000 – following an increase of 66 in the number being paid over £50,000.
The authority employs 261 people, who share £17,732,500.
The figures have been released as part of a study into middle management pay within local authorities in the UK, which is looking at how they are progressing in ‘slimming down’ bureaucracy.
The alliance found that, overall, there were 28,754 local authority staff paid over £50,000 a year, which cost taxpayers £1.9 billion in 2011-12.
Chief executive Matthew Sinclair said: “Taxpayers are still paying far too much for bloated bureaucracies that have been established in too many town halls over the last decade. It is incredible that some councils have even increased spending on high earning staff this year after a decade in which council tax doubled across the country and when every local authority needs to find savings and ease the burden. In those cases where it is the result of redundancy payments then we need to see the savings soon.”
