A martial arts expert chased and tackled two shop raiders – flooring one that was wielding a hammer – after a smash and grab raid at a jewellers.
Zak Holland, 27, from Boston, said ‘instinct took over’ when he confronted the man in Peterborough.
Zak, who works at a phone shop opposite Stephen Diggle Goldsmiths in Westgate Arcade in the city centre, rushed to action after the jewellers’ front window was smashed and goods taken from the display.
He said: “It seemed to happen very quickly. I heard some noise, followed by a crash, and some people shouting.
“I saw two men with masks on running past the shop, and I jumped over the counter and followed them.
“I followed one of them, who had a hammer, and he eventually stopped running.”
He said he used his mixed martial arts training – including Brazilian Ju-Jitsu – to tackle the man, taking his hammer and bringing him to the floor.
Mr Holland has only been working at Phone Trader for a month and this was the second time he tackled burglary suspects. He said: “A couple of weeks ago outside the store I saw a woman go flying and end up on the floor, and a geezer push past. I managed to get to him and take him to security.
“My girlfriend is really proud of me. I used to be a bit of a criminal – just a bit of petty shoplifting – but I have sorted my life out now.
“I just couldn’t stand by and watch. I didn’t really think about what I was doing – instinct really took over.”
Two men have been charged in relation to the incident in Westgate Arcade.
A 19-year-old man from Yaxley and a 21-year-old man from London have been charged with burglary and assault with intent to resist arrest. Both have been bailed to appear at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 4.
