They are called the RAF Drivers and, according to a spokesman at RAF Coningsby, nothing and nobody goes anywhere.

The spokesman said: ”They operate cars, minibuses, cranes and specialist vehicles to ensure RAF personnel and equipment are in the right place at the right time. They supply a service for just about everyone, whether it’s a fire-fighter or a medic.

“The basic Driver duties include hospital runs, coach runs and operating specialist vehicles.

“Typical responsibilities range from driving a range of vehicles in support of operational deployments to transporting hazardous materials between units using Large Goods Vehicles.

“RAF Coningsby Drivers carry out many of these duties and one of these includes the responsibility for refuelling aircraft – whether operational Typhoons on stand by for Quick Reaction Alert or the historic aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.”
