It’s a theft, Jim, but not as we know it

James Elstob with James Doohan, who played Scotty in Star Trek

A trio of priceless Star Trek costumes created for a fan by his mother were stolen from the pub he runs with his wife.

James Elstob had worn the costumes to dozens of conventions, where he met iconic characters including Scotty and Spock – and he was even wearing one when he met his wife April in Australia.

But over the weekend, somebody went into a cupboard in the foyer at The Coach House, on the A16 at Keal Cotes, and took the outfits, with no regard for the sentimental value they hold for their owner.

The valuable costumes have now been returned to their rightful owner, but some parts are still missing.

The costumes – two Captain Kirk outfits and a Spock one – were handmade by James’ mother more than 20 years ago.
The landlord told The Standard: “They are one of a kind, and it’s not just the costumes – it’s the badges on them as well. Some of them can’t be replaced.
“I’m devastated that people would do this.”
James was wearing one of the Captain Kirk outfits at a convention in Brisbane, Australia, when he met his wife April Claridge-Elstob. He has also worn them to meet some of his heroes, including the late James Doohan, who played Scotty in the popular TV series, and Leonard Nimoy, the man behind Spock.
April said: “They have been around a bit. He met Scotty in that costume.
“It’s disappointing. His mother spent hours making these costumes. The hours she spent in front of that TV with the pause button going, trying to get a good shot of the uniforms to make them exact.”
The costumes were returned on Monday evening. James and April found them outside the pub porch in a black bin bag. However, an expensive badge and belt from one of the costumes are still missing, and police are appealing for their return.
The pair, have only been running the pub, on Main Road, since January.
