Labour remain councillor recalls '˜first campaign' to leave the EU

It's come full circle for one Labour councillor who in 1975 voted to leave the Common Market but tonight is on the other side of the fence.

Boston Borough Council coin Paul Gleeson told The Standard tonight that the original referendum was his first major campaign for the party.

Mr Gleeson, a Labour Party member since his 15th birthday said the campaign back then was a quieter affair with mostly politicians interested.

He said today: “People are more interested. The main thing is more interest.

“People have experienced it now.”

He said that he was only just on the remain side however, adding: “If you had asked me this time last year I would most certainly have been on the leave side of it.”
