Last attempt to save post office

Tuesday, 10am - "THIS is the final effort to save the post office."

The words of Boston borough councillor Ray Newell regarding a public meeting called to fight the proposed closure of Boston's Brothertoft Road Post Office.

The Post Office is one of two in the Boston-area – along with Wrangle Common – at risk of closure, with a six-week consultation due to end on August 26.

As a last hurrah, a public meeting has been organised for August 19, when representatives from Post Office Ltd are expected to explain the reasons for the proposed closure, while townspeople will also have the chance to ask them questions.

Coun Newell, who represents the Staniland South ward, said: "Brothertoft Post Office is extremely important to West Boston, and indeed for other areas - for people and businesses. It is a very popular post office, and is needed for the community."

In the first week after the consultation period was announced, 900 people pledged their support to a campaign against the closure. That figure now stands at more than 1,400.

Sub-postmistress Emma Louise-Poole said post office users in the area feel victimised by the organisation's decision.

She said: "They can't understand why they have proposed to keep two offices on the other side of Boston open, but close the only one on the west side of town. A lot of people have taken it quite personally."

l The meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 19, at the Zion Church, Brothertoft Road at 7pm.
