Man stole perfume from Asda

Monday, 12pm - JAMIE Douglas Simpson stole perfume worth £50 to pay for a train fare to Skegness, magistrates have heard.

However, his crime didn't smell so sweet when his buyer took the goods but never showed up with the money.

On Wednesday, Boston Magistrates' Court was told how the 28-year-old recovering heroin addict – currently staying with friends on Boston's Fenside estate - was attempting to get the money together to return to his former home at Barnes Crescent.

He was 'desperate' to do so after being told his possessions were to be removed from the building.

"He was previously residing at Skegness for quite some time," Philippa Chatterton said in defence.

"The property was no-longer available but his personal property was kept at the address.

"He was told by friends his property was being thrown out and he was desperate not to lose all his worldly possessions."

Simpson, who lives on benefits, took two bottles of perfume – a Hugo boss scent and Obsession by Calvin Klein – from the town's Asda store on December 4.

Prosecutor Marie Stace said he was seen concealing the goods before leaving the store and riding off on a mountain bike.

He was later arrested.

"In interview he said he wanted to sell the perfume to pay for a train fare to Skegness.

"An unknown person took the perfume but didn't pay for them," Miss Stace announced.

Simpson - who now uses methodone to help him overcome his drug addiction - pleaded guilty to the theft.

He was handed an 18-month conditional discharge.

Chairman of the bench Steve Burgess said: "It's very much in your court. We see this as a blip so it's up to you not to reoffend."

He must also pay 50 in compensation.

No court costs were ordered.
