Boston’s Mayor has joined colleagues from Antarctica’s frozen wastes to the summit of Ben Nevis this morning when he raised the Commonwealth flag.

Coun Paul Kenny took the honours during the mass flag-raising effort at Municipal Buildings in West Street at 10am, along with 499 other locations throughout the UK to mark Commonwealth Day.

A specially-written Commonwealth Affirmation was read out by Coun Kenny, before the raising of the flag.

It was the first time that local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles had taken part in local flag-raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day allowing for a widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth.

Charity teams marked the day by taking Commonwealth flags to the top of the UK’s four highest national peaks and used the occasion to raise funds for their worthy causes.
