'No promises' on police funding
Sunday, 9am - Lincolnshire Police is unlikely to have it's funding shortfall by the Government – that's according to the Police minister.
Top officers have met new policing minister Vernon Coaker to complain that the Government's methods of funding the force are leaving it starpped for cash.
While Mr Coaker said he'd listen and take concerns on board , he said it would be wrong to pretend he would be ploughing extra cash into the county's force.
After meeting with officers in Sleaford last week, he said: "I can't stand here outside Sleaford Police Station and guarantee anything.
"What I can do is to come and see the work the police are doing and listen to what they have to say.
"What I have to say is that different forces across the country raise different issues and that's why there is a review going on at this time."
The national review of the funding formula will determine how much police forces receive in the future.
But Mr Coaker said this did not mean that the current formula was not working – a point Lincolnshire's leading officers refute.
They told Mr Coaker that much more money was needed because the force was the worst funded per head in the country.
Chief Constable Richard Crompton said: "These are desperately tough times economically and it would be naive to think he has come with a pot of money.
"But I think we are putting across to him very successfully our key messages.
"We do have some long-term funding issues which only the Government can solve."
This year Lincolnshire Police had it's proposed 78 per cents rise in its share of the council tax capped to a 26 per cent hike by the government.
