NOSTALGIA PICTURES: Setting sail for 1997 with the HMS Endeavour

Following the news this week that an American research team might have found out where the HMS Endeavour, also known as HM Bark Endeavour and later called the Lord Sandwich lies at the bottom of the ocean, readers took to social media to point out that the replica had visited Boston.

We took a look through our archives to find a number of pictures, both in colour and black and white, from the second visit and its associated events on October 17.

Boston is linked to the Endeavour, like other parts of Lincolnshire, through Revesby explorer Sir Joseph Banks.

After the news broke, Boston Borough Council’s Coun Claire Rylott, portfolio holder with responsibility for the Guildhall, explained: “This will be very exciting if it is The Endeavour. Boston’s connection is through Sir Joseph Banks, who sailed with Captain Cook as botanist on his voyage of discovery to Australia and New Zealand.

“Sir Joseph later became recorder for Boston – a town clerk of its day – and had his office in the Guildhall, where his portrait hangs today. It would be thrilling if anything remains in the wreck to connect it to Sir Joseph.”
