Nurse running in memory of her mum
Saturday, 9am - A NURSE at Boston's Pilgrim Hospital is appealing for sponsorship as she prepares to run the world's first-ever Kilomathon in memory of her late mother.
Sarah Hill, 37, of Sibsey, hopes to raise 1,500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association when she takes part in the 26.2km road race on Sunday, March 14 - Mother's Day - from Nottingham to Derby.
Her mother, Carol Ann Biggs, died in May 2008 after a two-and-a-half-year battle with the progressive disease, which causes weakening of the muscles, affecting eventually the movement and function of limbs, speech, swallowing and breathing. A cure is yet to be found.
Sarah, who works as a stoma care nurse at the Sibsey Road hospital, described the disease as 'devastating'.
"It just devastates everybody," she said. "The worst thing about it is the brain remains active."
"It is very frustrating for the person with Motor Neurone Disease," she said.
Sarah, a mother of two, said the only thing that lessened the horror of the ordeal was the support of the Motor Neurone Disease association, along with the county's St Barnabas Hospice.
She organises an annual ball with her husband as a fundraiser for the association and is now hoping to raise even more to support its work helping sufferers, their families, and search for a cure, by taking part in the inaugural kilomathon.
A vice-chairman of the Boston Ladies Circle, she will be joined by member Julia Scrimshaw, of Sibsey, while other members Vicky Moore, of East Keal, Louise Balgarnie, of Frampton, and Liz Balderston, of Friskney, will help as race crew. It will be the longest run Sarah has ever tackled, with her best before being 10k.
She said: "I am very anxious about it. Apparently, there's lots of hills which, obviously, is a bit difficult to get into the training programme here."
"I think at the end I will be very tired and very emotional," she said.
