OSBERVER: Not another council survey

Once again the council is inviting residents to take part in a survey which gives us the opportunity to let the council know how well they are doing with various services across the borough, and at the very end there is yet another (smaller) survey on behalf of the county council for residents to tell them what they think about the Market Place refurbishment.

All very laudable, but didn’t we have the same or a similar survey only last year – with the promise that the results would be made known within six months?

I might be wrong (no doubt the council will soon tell me) but I can’t recall any mention of any results. Or were the results not those which either the borough council or the county council wanted? It reminds one of the referendum in Eire a few years ago about the EU when the first vote – a resounding ‘no’ – was declared not the right answer and the Irish were asked to vote yet again till they gave a ‘yes’ vote.

I have no problems with surveys if the results are acted on, or at least given. But, especially with the Market Place survey, it will be interesting to see what the results are this time. Going on recent letters to the press it seems the result certainly will not be the one the county council wants!

It’s also a little puzzling that the survey isn’t being distributed to every house in the borough: why not do a survey at the same time the rate notices go out and include it in the same envelope? As it is, the survey can only be done online or by visiting the council offices; not everyone is online and not everyone feels like making a journey to the offices to pick up a copy. Or perhaps this is what the council wants – not much of a response and then they can claim everything is ‘all right.’

If you are interested in doing the survey see the front page of the Boston Bulletin which is also on the council website.
