Outrage over school merger plan
Updated Wednesday, July 12, 9.30am: OUTRAGED parents have formed an action group to try to halt plans to merge Boston's grammar schools.
The potential merger was revealed on Friday in a joint statement sent to The Standard by the headteachers of Boston Grammar School (BGS) and Boston High School (BHS).
It read: "The governing bodies of both schools have agreed to examine the feasibility of a proposal which would result in a mixed grammar school operating from a single site within six years.
"Both schools' governing bodies, recognising the significant impact of demographic changes in Boston and the falling rolls in primary schools, considered how best to meet the challenges ahead.
"John Neal and Helen McEvoy, headteachers of BGS and BHS respectively, are convinced what is being proposed will provide the best long term strategy for all the young people of Boston."
Parents were angry they had not been told about the plans sooner.
Deborah Evans, 43, has two sons at BGS and has organised the Boston Grammar School Action Group.
She said: "A lot of parents and their children who attend BGS are in shock and very upset.
"No parent had been informed of a possible merger and the school rushed out a letter, we feel the last in line to know.
"The worry is a merger would be a slippery slope and could lead to the school shrinking then possibly closing altogether.
"What will happen to the new buildings on BGS' site if it moves to Spilsby Road?
"The headteacher has not grasped the current situation - the school is doing so well and is one of the most improving in the area."
Paul Mould, 72, president of the Old Bostonian Association (OBA), a group for former pupils of BGS, said: "It hasn't really sunk in yet. I think it is definitely a bad idea and hope it will not mean BGS loses its grammar status."
