Peril on Boston's roads

Wednesday 9.15am - BOSTON Borough is in the top five per cent of most dangerous roads for children, a UK study has found.

The borough was placed 17th highest out of 408 areas according to The Child Casualties Report 2010: A study into the resident risk of children on roads in Great Britain 2004-08.

The report by the Road Safety Analysis (RSA) reveals one in 290 children in Boston are at risk of being a road casualty.

John Siddle, the communications manager for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP), said: "We feel one child death on the roads of Lincolnshire is one too many and will strive to prevent any further deaths and reduce the serious and slight injuries on our roads."

He added the actual figures in the Boston area for that period included 177 young people injured - 12 seriously and one child losing its life.

According to the LRSP, between 2004 and 2008 there was an average reduction of 21 per cent in child casualties.

It notes the main causes of child injury on Lincolnshire roads as being children stepping out from behind parked cars, crossing the road after getting off buses, and not being properly restrained in vehicles.

The report found risk increased with age with boys more likely to be injured on the road than girls.

The most dangerous day of the week is on Friday and the highest risk month is May.

Steve Willis, the divisional highways manager for Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department said: "The safety of road users is our absolute priority."

He added a number of efforts are being made to improve safety in Boston.

Plans include initiatives for cycling and walking as part of the Boston Transport Strategy, school safety zones and reactive signs.

The RSA, a not-for-profit company, examined 120,000 crashes involving children aged up to 15 using postcodes to compare risk levels across the 408 areas.

The report places Boston Borough second in the county to North East Lincolnshire which appears in eighth position with one in 262 children at risk.
