Reports came into The Standard that residents in Kirton, Frampton and Wyberton were affected with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue services only leaving the Spalding and Kirton areas at about 5am this morning.

The service tweeted that two pumps and one high volume pump in Spalding and two pumps in Kirton had been assisting residents with flooding mainly affecting Willington Road, Church Lane, Station Road, High Street and Penny Gardens.

Crews from Kirton and Boston attended.

Lincolnshire County Council also put out a video of advice on their Twitter account.

A spokesman said: “In Kirton, LCC are on site – initial investigations show that drainage pipes were working flat out and it looks like a case of too much rainfall too fast for the pipes to cope with.

“As a lead local flood authority, we are now checking all gulleys to make sure they were working as they should.

“We are working with Anglian Water and the Drainage Board. Sewers will also be checked.”

They said that gulleys and ditches between Kirton and Sutterton were dry but that fields and land were flooded, pointing further to the cause being the sheer amount of rain not being absorbed fast enough.

They said initial thoughts were that there was simply too much rain too fast rather than any failure in systems.

Lincolnshire Police reported that officers had been checking on the elderly on the Dennis Estate and helping out the county council’s Highways department with a view to closing the road due to water displacement by traffic but said they had resumed their other duties within an hour-and-a-half.

Boston Borough Council also had staff out in Kirton during the flooding.

A spokesman said: “We have two sweepers out there today cleaning up the mess left.

“We are sending officers out to undertake Community Impact Assessments to see if we can provide any advice to people.

“We will collect flood-damaged goods free of charge if there are any, once insurers have sanctioned disposal.”
