Prickly hogs prepare for new home
Tuesday 5.30pm - PRICKLY little friends being cared for by a hedgehog rescue centre in Old Leake are looking forward to the building of their permanent new home thanks to a generous donation from one of our readers.
The Standard first featured Carringdon Hedgehogs' appeal for help with their building project back in June, and since then, the centre has received 800 bricks from John Leason of Wrangle.
They will go towards the project to build a 30-foot square outdoors enclosure for the hedgehogs which can never return to the wild.
The centre, on Pode Lane, currently cares for 14 hedgehogs ranging from orphaned babies to those with 'traumatic' injuries. One new residents is 'Stumpy' the hedgehog that was discovered as a baby with the end of her foot missing. She has since grown up and her foot has healed.
"Our blind hedgehog Lucy is fit and healthy and ready for her winter hibernation," said centre owner Angela Smith.
Lucky the three-legged hedgehog, whom we previously featured, recently gave birth to three babies.
Angela explained: "She reared them well for three weeks but sadly became ill and died. Thankfully all the babies survived and have since been released into the wild."
Angela is now looking to start work on the outdoors enclosure that will provide a permanent home and natural environment for some of the residents.
She added: "My next project will be to dig out the foundations which I am hoping to start during the autumn months and attempt the laying of bricks myself."
