Issues around Polish people living in Boston, highlighted in a council immigration report, have been raised at a meeting between the borough council and the Polish Consulate.
Boston Borough Council Couns Mike Gilbert and Paul Kenny met general consul Lukasz Lutostański to discuss some of the findings of the report - including concerns about foreign vehicles, houses of multiple occupation and street drinking.
Portfolio holder for community development Coun Gilbert said: “It was a constructive meeting at which we discussed a range of issues some of which have been identified by our task and finish group report. Progress is being made on a number of these.”
Task and finish group chairman Coun Kenny added: “For example, we had a discussion about Polish vehicles visiting the UK and are delighted at the willingness for the consulate general to work with the police.”
A council spokesman said the agenda drawn up by the consulate general reflected issues raised by councillors, the public and Polish nationals living and working in the area.
They included cooperation between the consulate general and the police, an evaluation of differences between British and Polish law and the attitudes of Polish nationals towards respecting the law.
Mr Lutostański said: “I am delighted to know we are going to work together to improve our cooperation. I strongly believe that the next meeting in April will start a new level of dialogue between Boston Borough Council, the Polish Consulate and the Polish community.”
Other discussions included multi-cultural cooperation, challenges for the Polish and British community in Lincolnshire with regards to recent anti-immigration protests, and ways of getting to know the Polish culture and Polish expectations from the borough council.
