Fifty year 8 pupils and teachers from Thomas Cowley High School in Donington have just returned from an educational trip to France and Belgium to visit World War One battlefields.

The group visited museums, cemeteries, preserved trenches and underground bunkers during their four-day trip.

After landing in Calais they travelled into Belgium where they visited Ypres and Lille.

Day three saw visits to the Lochnager Mine Crater, the Thiepval Memorial and the Somme 1916 Museum where life of soldiers in the trenches is recreated.

Other visits included the Flanders’ Fields Museum at Ypres Cemetery; the Passchendale Museum with its underground bunker system; the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood and the Tyne Cott Cemetery which is the largest Commonwealth War Cemetery in the world, giving students an idea of the many lives lost in the conflict.

Students even had the chance to hear the Last Post played at the Menin Gate giving them time to reflect on the horrors of war.
