Questions over G4S contract
POLICE chiefs should conduct a public review into their contract with the firm at the heart of the Olympic security problems – according to one candidate for the force’s commissioner role.
Security firm G4S has come under the national spotlight for failing to supply enough staff for the London Games, prompting a call-up for many armed forces personnel.
G4S took on a £200 million contract with Lincolnshire Police earlier this year which saw them take on responsibility for town inquiry desks, custody suites and back office finance and IT functions.
Last week Chief Con Neil Rhodes said the Olympic issues would have ‘no bearing’ on G4S’ work here but Labour Police and Crime Commissioner contender Phil Dilks wants to see proof that their contract here is running smoothly.
Mr Dilks told The Standard: “People need reassurance and not just them saying ‘it’s ok’, we need to see the evidence.
“I am calling for a public review into that whole contract.
“Up to a week ago, before the Olympics fiasco, G4S was seen as a magic solution to 20 per cent cuts, then this suddenly falls apart when you saw they were not delivering that.
“Are we sure that they are delivering what they are supposed to be delivering in Lincolnshire?
“I am not entirely reassured by people saying ‘leave it to us’.”
Lincolnshire Police will be quizzed by the Home Affairs Select Committee, chaired by Keith Vaz, on the G4S deal and culture secretary Jeremy Hunt was quoted in the press as saying that all the firm’s public sector contracts should be looked at after the Olympics.
A Lincolnshire Police Authority spokesman told The Standard: “It would be inappropriate to comment on any other part of the G4S business.
“As far as the authority are concerned our strategic partnership with G4S has made a solid start.”
