School improves after federation

Thursday - A VILLAGE primary school has made 'significant improvement' since being federated according to the Government's schools watchdog.

Sutterton's Fourfields CofE School has been judged as 'good' - the second highest of four grades - for its 'overall effectiveness' and 'capacity for sustained improvements' in its latest Ofsted inspection.

It is up from its 'satisfactory' rating in 2006, the year before the school federated with Swineshead's St Mary's CofE School.

The report states: "It has made significant improvement since it became federated because of the wider range of staff expertise and skills that have become available through the federation. These have been used well to support school development."

Executive headteacher Rob Little seconded the inspector's assessment.

"The process of federating and being able to join with a school like Swineshead has opened up so many opportunities that we are able to offer the children of both schools," he said.

The report praises pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, adding 'pupils have a keen understanding of their own beliefs as well as those of others'.

There was also credit for the teaching staff.

"Teaching is good and lessons are typified by enthusiastic teachers who strongly promote enjoyment. Consequently, pupils are well motivated and come to school ready to learn and eager to contribute to lessons," it stated.

The school was advised, however, to improve pupils' writing skills, increase the level of challenge for higher attaining pupils, and ensure precise learning expectations are included in lesson plans.

Mr Little said: "It was a fair report which gave a very clear picture of where the school was and I am sure when they come back again we will be even stronger

"I am sure in two years' time we will be outstanding when everything has been put in place."
