Schools to get new and improved kitchens
Monday, 1pm - FIVE schools in Boston and the surrounding villages are to benefit from a slice of more than £10 million to get hot meals back on the menu.
Carlton Road, Staniland and Tower Road primary schools in Boston, Kirton Primary School and St Michael's Primary School in Coningsby are on an initial list of 33 schools in Lincolnshire to be the first to have new kitchens fitted.
Currently, school meals across the county are provided through a number of suppliers including private contractors on and off school sites, secondary schools and from within a small number of existing primary school kitchens.
Under the scheme, it has been proposed the new or revamped kitchens will be operated by carefully selected private businesses, which are currently supplying school meals, under a lease.
The work is expected to take around two to three years to complete.
Adrian Reed, executive headteacher at Carlton Road, said: "Carlton Road is pleased to be looking forward to developing improved kitchen facilities for the provision of hot meals. This will be incorporated as part of the schools involvement in the primary capital project commencing in 2009."
Coun Patricia Bradwell, Lincolnshire County Council's executive councillor for childrens services, said: "This is great news for Lincolnshire primary schools as we continue to make good progress with hot school meals for our school children.
"New kitchens have been provided in areas identified as having the most need, and where they will be most effective."
Lincolnshire County Council says it is too early in the scheme to know how much of the funds will be spent at each school.
