The rare sight of the Northern Lights glimpsed outside of the Arctic Circle have been captured on camera in New York, near Boston.

Twitter user Russell Churchill (@drummer_russ) tweeted the photo this morning which he took in the village last night.

The lights, known as Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular and rare sight in the UK, and are caused when electrically-charged particles from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

They were spotted elsewhere in the UK, from Scotland to Wales, and as far south as Essex.
