Sticky solution to wasteful problem

Thursday, 6pm - AN ENTERPRISING Boston mother's sticky solution to household waste has received the Government's seal of approval.

Count On It labels are the brainchild of mother-of-two Lyndsey Young, and are designed to reduce the 6.7 million tonnes of food thrown away by UK households each year.

Born and raised in the town, she comes from a family of entrepreneurs, all of whom still live and work in and around Boston.

She said: "As a mum with two young boys, I came up with the concept of Count On It after finding myself and many other mothers like me were wasting food and money by throwing away half-used jars of food and fresh produce as we were unsure of how long they had been opened, stored or frozen."

In response, her Count On It labels take the guesswork out of freshness by allowing householders to mark the date the product was opened, stored, or frozen on them.

This is done by scratching off a grey surface beneath numbers representing days of the month and months of the year to reveal a pink base.

The self-adhesive labels have received the backing of the Government's waste reduction agency, Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), which is currently including boxes of Count On It labels in its LoveFoodHateWaste goodie bags.

The agency estimates that one box of Count On It labels would last an average family one month and could potentially save a household around 30 on its grocery bill.

Count On It labels can be purchased online at www.count-on-it.co.uk or at local stores across the region.
