Swineshead goes walkabouts to help brave Charlie

Wednesday, 5pm - KIND-hearted householders stepped up to the challenge of a six-mile 'moonlight walk' to help make life easier for a Swineshead toddler who is almost completely blind.

More than 50 people gathered at the village's Wheatsheaf Inn at 9pm for the beginning of the walk, held in support of Charlie Brookes.

Charlie, three this month, suffers from a number of conditions which have left him with just six per cent sight.

In a campaign backed by The Standard, his family, friends and Swineshead Pre-School are aiming to buy two LCD Acrobat CCTV Magnifiers at 1,500 each.

Mum Kelly Scrupps, 28, said the response was 'overwhelming'.

"We had a lot of people we did not know, who had read about it and been touched and come to help," she said.

More than 2,000 has already been donated to the appeal, meaning the first of the two machines is on its way. It is due to be presented to Swineshead Pre-School Centre, where Charlie attends, this week.
