Teenager raises cash for charity
Wednesday, 4pm - A SIBSEY teenager has handed £3,300 to charity after completing an epic 1,005 mile bike ride.
Sam Graves, a pupil at William Lovell Church of England School in Stickney, spent his Easter break completing the North Sea Cycle Route from Bologne in France through to Esbjerg in Denmark.
Now Sam, 15, has raised enough money to cure 157 people of leprosy through charity Lepra.
"I landed at about midday and after having something to eat I located my starting point on the North Sea cycle route," said Sam.
"I managed 35 miles that day but 20 of these were in the wrong direction, but I was determined not to do that again."
Sam battled through rain, mist and strong winds to complete, on average, more than 50 miles each day – reaching 84 miles on day 16 when he went into Denmark and onto the Viking town of Ribe.
Sam even celebrated his birthday along the way, giving himself a lazy morning before cycling 46 miles and setting up camp.
He was supported along the way by mum Yvonne and step-dad Paul, who cycled alongside him and helped to carry camping equipment.
A year before, Sam had completed a 500-mile ride along the same route and had been told the school would sponsor him if he chose it again. Lepra is a charity supported by the school.
Sam hopes to complete another challenge in the future at a different location but intends to plan his own route.
